Dedicated to better, with Bosman Wines

If we are completely honest with ourselves, Bosman Wines was a best kept secret that we should have discovered a long time ago. Such is the nature of 8th generation wineries, they often keep their heads down and focus on their people, processes and land, and don't feel the need to shout it from the roof tops. Well, we do! This family owned winery is unique, and has deep roots in the Cape Winelands, but this heritage should not be confused with "same old, same old", they are producing cutting edge wines and one gets the feeling that it is only the beginning of their journey.

One of the first things that struck us about Bosman, was just how deeply involved they are in the wine business. Not only do they have farms in the Wellington and Hemel-en-Aarde regions, but they are also one of South Africa's most successful vineyard nurseries. So in other words, even if you are not sipping on one of their wines, you would quite often be sipping on a wine that originated in their nursery.

Wine has been described as a place bottled, but in addition to the soil, climate and DNA of a vineyard, comes the PEOPLE element. This is an often overlooked part of terroir. It is also a pillar of the Bosman brand that we have been most impressed by. Not only is the winemaking and vineyard philosophy very much focused on organic viticulture, and minimal intervention winemaking, but the people of Bosman are very much invested in their vines, fruit, and wine. In fact, the workers of Bosman are significant shareholders in the winery. In addition to this, Bosman wines are Fairtrade accredited. This means that a % of the proceeds of each bottle sold are donated to their Adama foundation, which contributes towards education and upliftment projects, identified and managed by the farm employees.

This is truly a vision of the future for South African wine, but brought into the present, in a humble and deep rooted way by the Bosman family. So, what about the wines? Well, they keep getting better and better, every vintage we taste them. We are massive fans of their Optenhorst Chenin Blanc, showcased in a little clip below.

Bosman are also the first winery to produce a Nero d'Avola in South Africa, which is a vine that thrives in the warmest parts of Italy. If you can't beat the heat of Wellington and surrounds, then find the ultimate grape varietals to thrive in it! We are also drinking a lot of their Bosman Nature and Sun Organic Grenache Noir. An ultra smashable wine, best served slightly chilled. We also pulled some stats on wines that have been purchased an inordinate amount by our team, and the Bosman Twyfeling Cinsaut came out tops. Do not hesitate on this wine, it is a national treasure.

So, if you are dedicated to drinking better wine, then we would highly recommend exploring this rising star of a winery. Shop their wines here. Be sure to visit them in Wellington and their tasting room in the Hemel-en-Aarde too.
